Artist Statement

I’ve heard it said that we can find harmony in spite of the contrasting external issues that surround us. I, however, believe that we find harmony because of the relativity that is given to us. Cool water, warm earth and a human touch combined with the uncertainty and volatility of the flame present us with an object that is pleasing to the eye and enjoyable to use. My work emerges from early years spent turning over rocks in the woods and scooping up shells from crystal Missouri rivers. An immersion in nature coupled with an interest in utilizing relativity creates a body of work that speaks with an organic, harmonious voice.

Utilizing stoneware, porcelain, and earthenware, my work is predominantly wheel-thrown and altered. In the leather-hard stage, I carve into the clay. My “narrative” work is brushed with layers of colored slips before the carving takes place. All the work is then dried slowly and fired to a low temperature. Glazes are then dipped and sprayed onto the surfaces and the ware is fired to high temperatures in gas reduction and soda kilns. Food safe glazes are used on interiors of all functional ware.

  7. This is a great line- “Being the studio manager at Red Star means that I have “managed” to surround myself with wonderful people.” Every studio should be lucky enough to have managers with this positive attitude.
